The work was created as part of ‘The Web Of Water’, an international art project presenting different attitudes toward water; its use and misuse; and critical importance on Earth. The composition explores the explosion caused by the BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, which spilt 210 million gallons of oil during prime mating and nesting season for bird and marine species.

The illustration was created using layers of drawings, photographs and ink blots, to explore the destructive nature of oil coating bird’s feathers, by destroying the natural waterproofing and insulation and making it impossible to fly.
